Rahi, Manzoor

Manzoor Jallal, son of Jallal Gill has been carving his place in the difficult world of literature by writing, TV dramas and short stories. All his work appears under the pen-name Manzoor Rahi.

He has a BA (honours) degree in Urdu from The University of the Punjab. And building on that academic foundation he has published extensively in various nationally circulated magazines and newspapers like Hamzukhan, Naqeeb, Shalome, Tehrir, Jang and Nawa-e Waqt among others. He was first recognized for his TV drama Series, Such da samundar.*

Roomal Shah, Archdeacon Inayat

Padri Inayat Roomal Shah's ancestors, an agricultural clan, originally from the Eastern Punjab migrated to the Western Punjab and were relatively prosperous. He received his elementary education from the local government high school and continued his theological studies first, between 1930 -34, in Amritsar, India, then at Calrckabad Bible School (now in Pakistan).

In 1937 Bishop George Barnar ordained him to Church ministry following which he served as a chaplain in the British army. After retiring from service he served in Essa Nagri and later on the staff of Lahore Cathedral. He served Karachi Dioceses as an archdeacon for long time. Between 1994 - to 1997 he served the Christian community in the Oxford Dioceses in England.

According to the well-known Church historian, Dr. Yousaf Masih Yad, he was proud of the honour of having studied under the guidance of Qaziullah, the father of F.S. Khairulllah who became recognized by his monumental work Qamus-ul Kitab.

Roomal Shah was a religious leader, thinker, exegete and a very convincing writer. In UK he wrote continually in Tajali (monthly), Kalisiya International (quarterly) magazines. His published books are: Haqiqat-e Hayat, Haqiqat-e Taslees, and Hamara Virsa.

The Archdecan Inayat Roomal Shah fell ill in the beginning of 1997 and slept in the mercy of his Lord on 11 January 1997.

Aadarwi, Yaqoob Gill

Aadarwi, Yaqoob Gill Born on 12th October 1937 in Aadar, a small village near Rawalpindi, in the house of Karam Din Joseph and Alice Bibi, Yaqoob Gill was the eldest among the siblings. He started his education at the local village school and passed his primary grades at St. Joseph's Primary school and continued his studies at St. Patrick High School, Muree Road, Rawalpindi. His initial employment was as as a musician in the band platoon of the Pakistan Army. He resigned this post to to train and work as a medical lab technician in the Railway Hospital of Rawalpindi. A man driven by intense desire to educate himself, he went on to complete a course in homeopathy in 1967.

Among his God-given qualities were poetry, singing and music. For over four decades he created good literature and served the Christian literary community in various ways. It is claimed that his poetry has appeared in the national and international Urdu magazines and Newspapers*.

His services and accomplishments were repeatedly affirmed, as is evidenced by long list of awards given to him. Following is only a selection:

Khan, Barkat A.

A prominent Christian scholar with a unique style of writing which appealed to both his Christian as well as Muslim readers, Barkat A. Khan hailed from a town in Dist. Sialkot. He belonged to a well respected family of teachers and Padris and spent the best of his life acquiring knowledge. By profession he was a teacher.

He taught at the Government Christian High School Cant. from 1962 to 1974. He wrote prolifically.

He wrote the following books and pamphlets.

Ernest, Allama Paul

Ernest, Allama Paul Shamsul ullama Allama Paul Ernest was born in Khushpur on 27th February 1902 to a landowner Jewaya Masih. Parents and family agreed to name him Lall Deen. At the time of his baptism he was given the additional name of Paul Ernest. However, it was this latter name that stuck with him and became his unique identification for the rest of his life.

Ernest received his elementary education from his village, Khushpur, and then passed his Matriculation from Daloowali High School and FA from the Foreman Christian College (Lahore). He continued his studies first earning his Munshi Fazil and then acquiring full proficiency in Urdu, Persian, Punjabi, and English languages. He then proceeded to learn and master Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Arabic. Using his vast knowledge of the above mentioned languages he studied logic, philosophy, psychology, ethics, physics and religion. The study of religion especially attracted him and this led him to comparative study of world religions. It was during this period that he was awarded a BA degree from the Punjab University.

Ernest was not only an accomplished and life-long student of languages and religion but also a very respected teacher of these disciplines. He served as a teacher at St. Thomas High School for thirty-five years and for forty-three years at St. Albert Caticat.

His articles appeard in Catholic Naqeeb (کیتھولک نقیب), Acha Charwaha (اچھا چرواہا) Fazloon ki Maan (فضلوں کی ماں), Al- mayida(المائدہ), Talash (تلاش), Mshel( مشعل), Masihi Khadam (مسیحی خادم), Kalam-e Haq(کلام حق), Shaoor (شعور), and Shadab (شاداب) .

Allama Paul Ernest wrote the following ten books:

1. Haqiqat al-Masih (حقیقت المسیح)

2. Haqaiq-e Bible (حقائق بائبل)

3. Mqam-e Meryam (مقام مریم )

4. Purfazal Kanwari ( پرفضل کنواری)

5. Kanwari say Paydaish ( کنواری سے پیدائش)

6. Pedaishe Alam (پیدائش عالم)

7. Khuda ki Batt ( خدا کی بات)

8. Khuda Ki Zubaan (خدا کی زبان)

9. Khuda ki Kitab (خدا کی کتاب)

10. Chragh-e Rah (چراغ راہ)

He also published a series of articles in Catholic Naqeeb. Unfortunately these, to date have not been published in a book form. These appeared under the title:

Saleeb b'Jwab-e Kasr-e Saleeb (صلیب بجواب کسر صلیب).

He also translated (from English into Urdu) the following four books written by Brother Baptist Croose

1. Rafaqat al-Masih (رفاقت المسیح)

2. Anmole Moti (انمول موتی )

3. AlQader (القا در)

4. Unginat Anjam ( انگنت انجم)

Ernest was an eminent scholar, an idol for many Urdu speaking Christians of India and Pakistan, and the caliber of his scholarship was recognized by the leadership of the various protestant churches as well as by the catholic church.

He was knighted by the Pope John Paul VI as the Knight of St. Sylvester, Catholic Tanzeem-ul Musanafeen (تنظیم المصنفین) honoured him with the title Shamsul Ullama (شمس ا لعلاما)and the organization Hum Log (ہم لوگ) bestowed upon him the very revered title Allama, which stuck on as an inseparable part of his name.

In addition to the honorific titles mentioned above he was a worthy but a humble recipient of several medals, includingTaghma-e shuja'at ( تغمہ شجاعت ), Taghma-e Khidmat (تغمہ خدمت) Taghma-e fazilat (تغمہ فضیلت) and Taghma-e immtiaz(تغمہ امتیاز).

Christ the King Seminary, Karachi has had the honour of publishing a souvenir commemorating Allama's life and accomplishments. In Maryamabad a literary organization is operative under his name.
